Description
Date : 30/09/2019
Qualification : 1st place - ESA Member States
Country : Italy
Location : Valenza, Alessandria

2.1.a. You are about to land on the Moon. You have to make some decisions about the location of your settlement. Where would you locate your shelter on the Moon’s surface?
Close to the Lunar Poles.

2.1.b. Explain your choice from question 2.1.
We will build our lunar base at the south pole of the moon to use the water’s ice inside the craters on the surface. Thanks to “the data” confirmed by indian space probe in the Chandrayaan-1 Mission (2008-2009) we are sure to find plenty of water.

2.2.a. Where would you build the shelter: on the surface or underground?
Underground.

2.2.b. Explain your choice to question 2.2.
We will build our lunar base underground so at no cost we would be protected from solar radiations and micrometeorits. On the moon there are no atmosphere or magneticfields to protect from these threats.

3.1. What will be the size of your Moon Camp?
Our lunar base will be as big as a footballfield. All the rooms will be undergrounds and above the entrance dome with the depreressurization room, the solar panels, the landing base of our spaceship and the shelter for the rover.

3.2.a. How many people will your Moon Camp accommodate?
3 – 4 astronauts.

3.2.b. Explain your choice to question 3.2.
We must be at least 3/4 astronauts to do all the work diving the tasks. We will bring robots to help us in the heaviest jobs.

3.3.a. Which local Moon resources would you use?
• Water ice
•Regolith (Lunar soil)
• Sunlight

3.3.b. Explain your choice to question 3.3.
We will use the “regolith” to make the modules of the base with a 3d-printer. We will melt the ice and purify. The resulting water we will transform and purify the ice in water with the purifier. Solar panels will produce and store energy from sun rays.

3.4. Explain how you plan to build your project on the Moon. You should include information about the materials and building techniques you are planning to use. Highlight the unique features of your design.
We will land on polar moon and we will deposit a metal cylindercontaining an inflatable dome on the ground. We will drill the ground with spacedrills wich are being planned in the italian company (finmeccanica selex es). We will use the 3d-printer to make all the modules of the base with lunar regolith powder. We planned to build 8 rooms: a greenhouse to produce food and oxygen, a room with a purifier to turn ice into water, a laboratory for experimenting, a control room for communicating with the earth, a gym where we train to keep fit and at the same time produce energy thanks to the bikes connected to the dynamo, a recycling room where we will transform all the waste in energy, the house where we will sleep and eat, the entrance dome.

3.5. Describe and explain the design of the entrance to your Moon Camp.
The entrance dome will be a connex semicircle. You enter through a small hexagonal corridor which has a depressurisation chamber inside.

3.6. Explain how the Moon Camp provides protection for the astronauts.
The astronauts will be protected inside the lunar base. While they have to wear spacesuits and a provision of oxygen to exit.

3.7. Describe the location and arrangements of the sleeping and working areas.
Inside the lunar base the astronauts will have a bedroom and the necessary to eat. They will be able to keep fit in the gym, make experiments in the laboratory and communicating with the earth in the control room.

4.1. Describe what will be the power source for the shelter.
The main source of energy will be the solar panels on the ground. We will also obtain energy from the trash refabricator that recycles all the waste produced in the lunar base. We will load dynamos by training in the gym.

4.2. Describe where the water will come from.
We will produce by melting the ice found in the lunar craters on the moon pole. We will purify it for all uses and we will transform part of it into drinking water.

4.3. Describe what will be the food source.
We will bring some supplies from the earth and we will grow vegetables and fruits in the greenhouse.

5.1. What would you like to study on the Moon?
On the moon we could make many experiments and researches we would like to study the solar wind. Thanks to the absence of the magnetic field and the atmosphere, we might better the solar particles (they are trapped into the regolith) and the cosmic radiations. The moon is also a witness of news of the past that no more exist on earth. Analysing the lunar craters we will understand better the formations of the earth and the evolution of the stars. We would like to create a radiomoonstation to document our searches with a radiotelescope. Then we would like to organise “the tour on the moon” for space tourists with a visit to the base and a tour on space rover.

Projects are created by the teams and they take the full responsibility of the shared content.
